Product configuration is becoming increasingly important and is a trend that can be found in many industries. Customers no longer want to buy just a standard product, but something that reflects their personality and meets their individual requirements. This trend can also be seen in backpacks, where customers are looking for more and more customization options.
The project was carried out by a team and involved the development of a configurator with extensive configuration options. The customer can choose between three different models, from five different materials, in three colors and with three different water resistance levels. This results in a total of 135 different variants from which the customer can choose.
When developing the configurator, the focus was on clear structuring and easy handling. The customer can return to any step at any time and select an alternative configuration. A history list in the right margin makes it possible to retrace and change the steps of the configuration. The clear structuring and simple operation provide the customer with a pleasant user experience.
The design of the interface, which appears anything but generic, is particularly striking. The travel backpack is configured through an individual “journey” where the customer is guided through a map with mountains, valleys and rivers. This adds an experiential element to the configuration process, making it an interactive experience.
The goal of the project was to provide the customer with a unique and customized product while optimizing usability and user experience. The configurator has been well received by customers and is being used successfully.
Configuration options
In this example, I ventured with my teammates to develop a backpack configurator. Thereby the possibility of configuration is very extensive.
3 different models
5 materials
3 colors
3 water resistance levels
= Which gives 135 different variants
The backpack configurator allows customers to design a unique product that exactly matches their needs and preferences. With the numerous configuration options, customers can select and customize their ideal model by combining different materials, colors and water resistance levels. In total, there are 135 different variants to choose from, giving each customer a unique product that meets their exact requirements.
A special focus in the development of the configurator was on user-friendliness. The interface is clearly structured, tidy and easy to use, so that the customer can easily return at any time and select an alternative configuration. This is made possible by the history list, which is displayed on the right edge of the screen. The journey the customer takes on the platform is also an important feature of the configurator. The customer is guided through an interactive map that takes them on an imaginary journey through mountains, valleys and across rivers. Each configuration decision made is represented as a step on this map, giving the customer a visual idea of their individual backpack configuration.
The three different backpack models, Citynomad, Naturenomad and Allroundernomad, offer customers a wide range of styles and features to suit their needs. The size can also be customized and customers can add other features such as waterproof materials and certain extensions. This individualized approach gives customers a high degree of control over the end result and creates a special shopping experience.
The feedback on the backpack configurator was consistently positive. In particular, the ability to customize and tailor the backpack was highly appreciated by users. The interactive design, which takes the user on a journey to configure the backpack, was also found to be appealing and entertaining.
The project demonstrated how important individuality has become for consumers. Product configuration is becoming more prevalent in many industries as the desire for personalized and unique products grows. With the backpack configurator, we have shown that individuality and personalization are also possible in the world of backpacks.
The clear structure and easy handling of the configurator were also important factors in the success of the project. Users were able to jump back to any step in the process at any time and choose an alternative configuration, which made for a pleasant user experience.
Overall, the project was a great success and showed that product configuration is an important trend that will continue to grow in importance. We are proud to have developed a backpack configurator that offers users a unique experience and allows them to design their very own backpack.
